Fitting the mullion. Jim would first cut stock to near finish dimension, then tack glue to a backer. He was thus assured that the mullion was true and with the addition, provided extra width for support and handling in machining a groove for the glass. If beginning with solid extra-width stock, unpredictable warping can occur when sawing to finished dimension.
